What is Pyrethrum ?

Pyrethrum cinerariaefolium Trev., also known as Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium, is a plant belonging to

the Asteraceae family, originally from the Middle East. It was introduced to the United States in 1876 and

later cultivated extensively in countries such as Japan, Africa, and South America, forming an industry.

In 1940, it was introduced to Kenya and Tanzania in Africa, followed by Australia in 1976, gradually developing

into two major cultivation areas in Africa and Australia. It has now been cultivated and used for over 150 years.

In China, it was successfully introduced by the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences in the

1990s. It has been cultivated on a large scale in places such as Qujing, Honghe, and Yuxi in Yunnan Province.

After nearly twenty years of development, it has become the world's third largest original production area of

pyrethrum, and its product quality has been recognized internationally.

Pyrethrum is the only intensively cultivated insecticidal plant in the world. Its flowers contain highly effective

insecticidal active substances, collectively referred to as pyrethrins, which consist of six structurally similar

compounds. Since pyrethrins are derived from natural sources, they degrade easily in the environment, with no

records of accumulation in humans or animals, and do not transfer along the food chain.

Therefore, they are recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture

Organization (FAO) as the safest and most effective insecticidal substances.
